Check out the talk …
Check out the talk by Bill Gates on Ted Talks about energy, where he dismisses fusion…. I had hopes he’d save himself, but damn….. no luck…..
@ZaphedBeebleBrox …
@ZaphedBeebleBrox YES! Finally, someone else out there sees the problem is not a lack of power: Instead, it is that we humans are too greedy in our use of such power, and the planet can no longer support this habit. Even with fusion power available in the future, there will be far too many 2nd world countrys (east india, china, etc) becoming 1st world and demanding their share of the good life. We cannot support any more developed countrys!
Pity many people …
Pity many people commented on rather than listened to the video. If they did they’d know it is fusion not fission, it is clean without the long half lives related to fission (12 years only) and that deuterium and tritium are easily obtained from deposits of lithium and the sea. It also spells out that while fusion is still an endothermic reaction that by 2035 this will not just be resolved but will be a sustainable commercial product.
Put Bill O’reilly …
Put Bill O’reilly and Obama inside a sealed chamber and see the fusion energy flow.
The solution is to …
The solution is to get rid of humans. The consumer society has to end.
@Blunder1248 …
@Blunder1248 superficial thinking. Find out how much building solar power plant costs, how much energy investment it requires and how long it takes until the net energy is positive. Also estimate energy profit vs. investment. Include the factor of lifetime and you will see that it just won’t work with current resources and technology.
The main reason …
The main reason Europe is more advanced in this technology is because they don’t have much for fossil fuel reserves. Nearly all of it is imported and is why gas prices in Paris are like $10 per gallon. Most energy is produced in France is nuclear power and at a surplus, they export it for profit. So they’re learning to adapt with out fossil fuels. If only the United States could be more like Europe.
how many years have …
how many years have we heard these empty promises?
Well money and …
Well money and political will for a start. However, rather than using photovoltaic cells, CSP could be a conceivable way to generate electricity in such a region. However I still believe it would be wasted on hydrogen production. Personal transportation as we have had it for the past couple of decades seems to me to be a dead end.
Well north of Afica …
Well north of Afica would be a good place to make it! Sea water and solar power! What else do you need?
@Blunder1248 And …
@Blunder1248 And where is the energy needed to make hydrogen gonna come from? Hydrogen is just an energy store that could be convenient for hydrogen cars, it is not a way to produce energy.

@Blunder1248 You …
@Blunder1248 You are so ignorant and stupid. Do you even know that hydrogen is not an energy source? Do you know it has to be produced by using energy? Hydrogen = energy storage, like any other battery. And where will you get that energy 20 years from now? From renewables? *NEWS FLASH* renewables generate only 9% of current world’s energy. Add in oil depletion, newly developing countries (like 80% of the world) and growing population and 20 years from now you get precisely dick.
such an uneducated …
such an uneducated statement. we will be lucky to have it running by 2030 but my prediction is 2035
Thats like trading …
Thats like trading gold bricks for lead weights
News update! We …
News update! We would be lucky to get this working within the next 500 years!
Stop spending all my tax money on these french gimps and put it toward Hydrogen production! EU is run by old gits that don’t have a clue and treat people like peasants.
I wonder if they’ve …
I wonder if they’ve though about the fact that greedy fossil fuel dealers who are high up in power might get jealous of their work and try to capture it? Also with this much energy new sciences may be discovered such as the convertion of energy to mass using a single atom
idea from …
idea from gift1from1the1godz: INFINITE ENERGY ok so this is what i came up with. a cat always lands on its feet. and toast always lands on the buttered side down. strap a peice of buttered toast on the back of a cat with the buttered sided facing upwards. then drop the cat from a 2 story houce or building then the last second before it hits the ground the cat would spin forever because the feet want to land on the ground but the toast wants to land on the buttered side down so INFINITE ENERGY!!!
In the 1950s the …
In the 1950s the newspapers and broadcast media sensationally declared that cheap, unlimited energy was just around the corner. This was fusion energy. It never happened. It is still just around the corner. It has been explained to us that developing fusion is trickier than we thought. Maybe. Specifically there is a problem with stability. But is it so intractable that it remains unsolved sixty years later? Or is fusion power being put on hold until the oil runs out?
Fusion could …
Fusion could sustain our energy needs for upwards a million years, not counting resources from outside the Earth. It might as well be infinite. We’ll probably end up needing higher energy output sources before we run out of the resources required for Fusion.
true but let me …
)
true but let me correct you….life with out sunLIGHT is possible. these organisms receive sustenance from geothermal vents coming from earth’s core. as you said, without a sun earth would not have received its inner heat or in fact would have never accreted.
so be thankful for that thing (even if it gives you sunburn
These things are …
These things are powered by chemical energy, no photons necessary. Now…ultimately this energy is probably sourced by radioactives. The source of those radioactives? Stars! Just not our star.
” And yes nature …
” And yes nature does need that, the earth has absorbed millions of terrawatts from the sun (far more in fact) over time without which there would be no life on earth.”
Kind of OT and I don’t mean to be picky but recent discoveries indicate the “without the sun life would be impossible” thing may not be true. We have found life forms on earth that receive NO energy from the sun in very deep oceans.
Oh and 1 more thing …
Oh and 1 more thing.. I don’t understand the “anti nulear fission movement” if it can help the development towards this..
agreed.. but you …
agreed.. but you just approved my point.. it’s just a retorical question.. I’m a 99.9% supporter of nuclear fusion.. I think it’s the future / It is the future..
