How can I make the Prime Minister of my own country (Australia) understand that Nuclear energy is not clean?
Today the Australian Prime Minister (John Howard) made this statement:
"In an age where we’re worried about global warming we should be looking seriously at nuclear power as an option, because it’s clean and it doesn’t emit greenhouse gases and I can’t understand why the extreme Greenies oppose it,"

If Uranium has a half-life of 760 million years, I don’t think that is clean! I have spent time in central Australia with the indigenous people there who are still suffering sickness & dislocation from nuclear testing in their lands, and others who have their waters polluted by tailings from existing uranuim mines. http://www.iratiwanti.org/
I use 100% solar energy at home. I dont need solar panels on my home, the power company pays for the energy to be generated at a solar "farm".This is truly easy, non-greenhouse gas producing, actually "clean" energy. I have emailed the prime minister http://www.pm.gov.au/email.cfm What else can I do?

You know it works for you. Do you think this would work on a large scale? No because they can not produce enough power for a whole city. No because it would not work in areas where is is extremely cold as they also they more cloudy days and more days with less sunlight. So we have other options you would say such as wind and wind has the same problems. Not enough capacity to generate enough power. We would need many many wind farms. Have you seen how ugly a wind farm is? Nuclear energy is a clean fuel the rods themselves last for many many years yielding energy for many thousands of people with no green house gas emissions. Meanwhile perhaps you could encourage your locale utilities to experiment with ways to get more energy to the people with the use of solar collectors located in more places but where they would not be obtrusive.

Theres nothing wrong with it, it is clean and the only real solution for energy if people would just get the facts about it, coal fired power plants are what are causing all the problems, if people think they are going to have electric/hydrogen cars, the only way is with wind power or nuclear power. Blowing up a nuclear bomb and testing are a whole differant thing..

He is attempting to justify increased mining of uranium in order to export more uranium and turn Australia into an " energy super power".

For low quality ores (less than 0.02% of U3O8 per tonne of ore), the CO2 produced by the full nuclear life cycle is EQUAL TO that produced by the equivalent sized gas-fired power station.
Nuclear energy is NOT the answer to Climate Change, it is just another method of increasing development and giving more public money to big business.
The fundamental solution to reducing the effects of climate change is simple.
We need to reduce consumption and increase efficiency… unfortunatley for big corporations there is not alot of money to be made in this process.
